With the spike in the coronavirus cases in California, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that Ventura, Orange County, among others, will have to go back to the new purple tier regulation system. California operates in a four-tier color-coded system, called the blueprint for a safe economy. It is ranked by seriousness–purple being the most restrictive to red, orange, and yellow–most flexible.
The numbers in Orange County had been on the rise from October and gotten even higher in November. In the last week of October, the cases were about 7.9 daily and rose to 14 cases daily in early November.
Ventura’s Public health director, Rigoberto Vargas, stated that:
“It’s a confirmation of how this virus works,” he said, noting cases are rising across the state and country. “Once it’s circulating out in the community, it transmits very readily. Numbers can rise significantly.”
“Businesses will have one day to meet purple tier restrictions, said Vargas, noting the deadline will be midnight Tuesday.”
“Schools that have already opened can remain open. But additional schools cannot open in the purple tier without a waiver.”
“Vargas said the local rise in cases reflects gatherings, including Halloween celebrations, that increase people’s exposure. He pointed a finger at colder weather and shorter days that drive people inside.”
“Vargas said school openings do not appear to have had a dramatic impact on the COVID rise. He said most of the school cases involve students and staff that are not back on their campuses.”
“Vargas said the number of people getting testing in Ventura County is rising as part of the strategy to combat the surge. He also stressed the importance of contact tracing.”
