Testing for COVID in Southern California
Southern California is one of the most densely populated areas in the United States, which also means that it has been one of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 virus. Mass testing capabilities have been at the forefront of importance for the entire United States in its battle against COVID-19. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was difficult to develop and distribute tests that were able to get results back to patients in a timely manner. Now, 7 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid COVID tests have begun to show up in Southern California testing sites.
What is rapid COVID testing?
Rapid COVID testing is a method that has been granted emergency use authorization (EUA) by the FDA. The approved rapid tests are antigen tests, which are commonly used for detection of respiratory pathogens, such as the influenza. Unlike viral tests, antigen tests are used to detect the presence of specific antigens, which implies the presence of a viral infection. These antigen tests are relatively inexpensive, are administered through a nasal swab, and can provide results in 15 minutes. With the expansive use of these tests, people will be able to know within minutes if they have the virus, and can take action accordingly. The continued development of these tests could be a step in the right direction for returning to normal. Southern California residents should know where to get tested for COVID-19, and if those testing sites offer a rapid antigen test. For more information on antigen testing, visit the CDC website. There, you can also find a complete list of guidelines on when to get tested, and what precautions you can take to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
