New COVID-19 Variant Has Arrived
Last week, California reported its first case of the new COVID-19 variant, initially found in the UK. And according to reports, two individuals from the same household in Big Bear were said to have been in contact with a traveler from the UK.
The traveler was said to have arrived from the UK on December 11th and started to see symptoms three days later.
According to the San Diego County Health Officer, Dr. Michael Sequeira, he said, “Based on the information currently available, we know that the B117 variant strain seems to spread more easily and quickly, ” He said. “Therefore, following all, safe practices is more important than ever.”
Presently, all four cases are males aged 30-50 years.
The CDC has recommended that travels to high-risk areas, including the UK, be avoided to reduce the new strain’s further spread.
In a briefing on Tuesday, Anthony Fauci said, “I’m not surprised you have a case, and likely more cases, in California. And we likely will be seeing reports from other states,” Fauci said. “I don’t think Californians should feel that this is something odd; this is something that’s expected.”
He went on to add that there’s no indication that the new strain is more harmful and that the current COVID-19 vaccine should be useful in fighting the new strains.
Health officials in the state have begged residents of the state to refrain from gathering with non-household members till the vaccines are appropriately distributed.
